Inspiration

The Jackson Oral History Project was inspired by the power of voice — the understanding that stories carried through lived experience hold an emotional depth no textbook can replicate. The vision centered on honoring community memory, preserving narratives that might otherwise fade, and transforming spoken word into a tangible, immersive exhibition experience. To extend the impact beyond static print, the project incorporated interactive QR codes embedded within the design, allowing visitors to access online video and audio recordings directly from their mobile devices. This created a layered storytelling environment where print and digital worked in harmony. The exhibition was produced across ten 33" x 80" pop-up banner panels, forming a cohesive, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Oral History Project visual narrative that surrounded viewers with history, imagery, and voice. The result was an immersive, accessible experience where community stories were not only seen—but heard and felt.

Design Elements

The design solution translated oral histories into a cohesive, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Oral History Project experiential exhibition that blended print, environment, and digital interactivity. The ten 33” x 80” pop-up banner panels were designed as a unified visual system, using consistent typography, grid structure, and visual hierarchy to guide viewers through a chronological and thematic narrative. Scale was intentionally leveraged to create presence and impact, allowing imagery and quotes to command attention while maintaining clarity and accessibility in public spaces.

To deepen engagement, QR codes were strategically integrated into the layouts, linking visitors directly to online video and audio recordings. This layered approach transformed the exhibition from a static display into an immersive storytelling environment—where voices could be heard alongside the visuals. The result was a thoughtfully structured, accessible experience that honored community narratives while bridging physical exhibition design with digital interaction.

Impact and Engagement

The Jackson Oral History Project created a meaningful bridge between community memory and contemporary audiences. By combining Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Oral History Project visual storytelling with interactive QR-linked video and audio, the exhibition invited viewers to move beyond passive observation into active engagement. Visitors were able to not only read excerpts of personal histories but also hear the voices behind them—creating a deeper emotional connection and sense of authenticity. The immersive 33” x 80” banner format commanded physical presence in the space, while the digital extensions expanded accessibility beyond the exhibition walls. The result was a dynamic, multi-sensory experience that amplified underrepresented voices, encouraged reflection, and strengthened intergenerational dialogue within the community.
